Its Open Studio time!
Back in the spring I registered for Cambridge Open Studios, and was excitedly daydreaming about opening up my little front room studio. I had never participated in any open studios, despite having lived the majority of the past decade in Cambridge or Somerville, two cities with vibrant open studio events. I loved the idea of strangers (and family and friends) being able to peek into my world, as I have done at many an open studio weekend. I was excited to curate a show of my own work, on my own terms.

Then in a whirlwind two months, I applied for, was accepted to, and moved into my own studio space at the Washington Street Art Center in Somerville. Whitney and I and a friend painted the space and slowly moved all my piles of fabric, sketchbooks, inks, pens, papers and weird collections out of the front room studio and into the WSAC. The front room became a living room- a place for relaxing rather than working and creating, complete with a comfy chair scavenged from the sidewalk and a new paper lantern hanging from the ceiling for mood lighting. Over the past few months, we've been training ourselves to refer to this room as "the living room," not "the studio" as it was for the past 4 years.
But I was already registered and in the brochure for Cambridge, so here I am! Curating a show of my own work, on my own terms in a familiar space. I'm still excited to welcome strangers and loved ones in, and to see what this experience brings to my creative practice. It will be exciting to see what this space can become, now that it is more of a blank canvas, not so filled with the debris of studio life. I'm going to hang my accordion fold sketchbooks, put out my textile and paper products I've been selling at markets and see how I can share all the many ongoing projects I have in the works. Come peek into my little world, and have some snacks while you're at it!
I hope you can make it September 29 and 30th,12-6pm. I'm number 42 on the map.
Somerville Open Studios will be next May, you can come visit me then at the Washington Street Art Center!
